Foods that may prevent cancer or even put you at greater risk
Nutrition has a direct correlation with cancer risk, but the foods you eat could also prevent cancer, cancer recurrence, and minimize chemotherapy side effects.
About 30% of all cancer cases are diet-related, and poor nutrition increases that figure to 70% for gastrointestinal cancers.
“In fact, a recent study showed that a 10% increase in processed foods led to a 10% increase in cancer incidence. It’s just a very direct relationship,” Dr Shad said. Marvasti, ABC15 Health Insider expert.
The American Cancer Society and the American Institute for Cancer Research recommend that you:
- Avoid processed foods and sugars
- Limit red meats and processed meats, which are a major culprit of colon cancer
- Limit alcohol consumption, especially for breast cancer patients, as even one drink may increase the risk of recurrence
To help revamp your diet, Dr. Shad says turmeric helps fight inflammation which can make a difference in chemotherapy side effects as well as cancer prevention.
Broccoli moves toxins in the body that lead to cancer.
Orange vegetables that contain carotenoids help reduce the risk of breast cancer by 20%.
