The Hudson Institute’s expertise in established and emerging areas of medical research was recognized, with research group leader Dr Minni (Minna-Liisa) Änkö added to the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the Victoria mRNA.

Dr Minna-Lisa Änkö

Dr nkö, a leading Australian RNA researcher, brings knowledge gained from 20 years of RNA research in Australia, Germany and her native Finland.

She is currently head of Functional RNAomics Laboratory, holder of a joint mandate at Reproductive health center and Cancer Research Center to Hudson Institute for Medical Research.

She joined an esteemed panel of leading global vaccine experts chaired by Victoria Principal Scientist Dr Amanda Caples, which also includes, for example, the Director of the Doherty Institute, Professor Sharon Lewin, the Director of the Burnet Institute, Professor Brendan Crabb and Professor Ricky Johnstone, the Head of the Gene Regulation Laboratory at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center and the Head of the Sir Peter MacCallum Department of Oncology at the University of Melbourne.

The Victoria SAG mRNA will lead the way in planning the development of the state’s mRNA research and manufacturing capacity and identify future uses of these technologies.

“The benefits will be extensive, from preparing for emerging threats that can be fought with RNA-based treatments, to creating many jobs in this growing field of research and production,” said Dr Änkö.

The Victorian government has committed $ 50 million to develop mRNA capacity, which will equip Australia with vaccine support for protection against coronavirus and future pandemics, and capacity for further research breakthroughs.

“This is a critical time for the growing Australian biotech industry and Victoria is at the center, but there is a lot of work to be done to make the most of this opportunity,” she said.
