For a while there, it seemed like this whole pandemic situation was improving. But the Delta variant is spreading quickly and Americans’ pessimism about the pandemic is on the rise, according to a new poll. Louisiana is currently struggling with one of the worst outbreaks of Covid-19 in the country. His largest hospital’s intensive care unit is stretched to its limits, with symptomatic patients lining up for beds. “We no longer think we are giving adequate care to anyone,” said a hospital administrator. Cases are also increasing around the world. The CDC recently added 16 destinations to its list of “very high” Covid-19 travel risks.
Millions of tenants are at risk of losing their homes in the coming months after a nationwide temporary eviction ban expired last week. The CDC put in place the suspension last year to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and now that the Delta variant is in full swing, that is becoming a concern again. Still, the expiration of the moratorium on evictions seemed to surprise the White House and Democrats in Congress, as they have both struggled in recent days to find a solution to avert a major housing crisis. Perhaps all of this could have been avoided: The Supreme Court ruled in June that extending the freeze would require congressional support. But this authorization did not come. Here is the suite for tenants.
3. Voting rights
Texas Democrats are rallying in the nation’s capital today to push Congress to pass voting rights law – and they’re backing up. More than 100 Democratic state lawmakers are joining the effort, including many from Republican-led states that have passed restrictive ballot bills. Since the 2020 election, at least 18 states have enacted 30 new laws making voting more difficult. Democrats in Congress introduced a sweeping voting and election bill, but it was defeated by Senate Republicans. Several Senate Democrats are currently working on a revised bill in hopes of reaching a bipartisan compromise.
The head of an organization helping Belarusians flee the country was found dead a day after his disappearance. Ukrainian authorities have opened criminal proceedings for what they called a suspected premeditated murder. Belarus had already come under international scrutiny in recent days after an Olympic sprinter in the country claimed she was forcibly removed from the Tokyo Games and told to return home against his will. She was granted a humanitarian visa from Poland yesterday after refusing to board a return flight. Belarus has been in turmoil since last year, when its longtime leader declared victory in a contested election, which led to mass protests and violent crackdown.
The Biden administration plans to indefinitely extend a Trump-era policy that allows the government to quickly deport migrants encountered at the US-Mexico border. The Trump administration instituted this policy early in the pandemic, citing concerns related to the coronavirus. But immigrant advocates and health experts argue it has no public health foundation and instead puts migrants at risk. Tens of thousands of migrants continue to enter the United States each month, and authorities say facilities are overwhelmed. Meanwhile, a government watchdog announced it was investigating a facility for unaccompanied migrant children in Fort Bliss, Texas following complaints that it looked more like a warehouse.
