Mesothelioma charity appoints specialist nurse in Thames Valley


The network of specialist nurses of a charity dedicated to supporting people with mesothelioma has grown with a new appointment in the Thames Valley region.

Charlotte Buckle is joining the team of British Clinical Nurse Specialists at Mesothelioma UK and will be based at Churchill Hospital, which is part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

His appointment means that the charity now has 32 specialist nurses across the country who support patients with mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

The UK has the highest incidence of the disease in the world and each year around 30 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust patch.

Graduated as a Registered Nurse in 2000, Ms Buckle has worked in cancer care for 20 years both at Oxford and at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

She has worked in departments, chemotherapy units and research teams, among other things, and 10 years ago she became a lung cancer nurse.

Ms Buckle was inspired to apply for the charity position after working alongside a mesothelioma nurse.

Reflecting on her appointment, Ms Buckle said: “Having seen the positive impact that a Mesothelioma Nurse has had on mesothelioma patients and their families, this is a wonderful opportunity for me to take on this role, and I feel really excited to do it. “

His role will be to support mesothelioma patients every step of the way in the treatment journey and to provide expert advice to colleagues across the trust and the wider region.

The Thames Valley region covers the counties and towns along the course of the Thames to west London and generally covers parts of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.
