Oncological massage | Norton Healthcare Louisville, Ky.

What is an oncological massage?

Oncology massage has been shown to relieve symptoms in cancer patients – improve mood, decrease anxiety, depression and pain. The benefits can last up to two days.

Typically, oncology massage involves the manipulation of soft tissues using light touch massage. Patients report that the massage helps distract them from their cancer journey, taking an hour just for themselves.

With experience and training in how cancer and its treatments affect the body, oncology massage therapists respond to the patient’s unique needs for positioning and pressure levels.

Patients are positioned as they wish. For example, if a patient recently had surgery, they may be propped up, lying on their side, or choosing a comfortable position for them that day.

The level of pressure applied by the oncology massage therapist is guided by patient comfort.
