Specialist cancer clinic is coming to Wrexham, health minister confirms

A SPECIALIST clinic will be set up in Wrexham to reduce cancer waiting times and help with early diagnosis.

The news was confirmed today by Welsh Government Health Minister Eluned Morgan and was immediately welcomed by local Senedd members Ken Skates and Lesley Griffiths.

The new Rapid Diagnostics Center (RCD) at Wrexham Maelor Hospital will be one of three in North Wales and could help catch early signs of cancer before it grows further.

The Minister said: “The introduction of CDRs is an important part of the national approach to improving cancer outcomes. RDCs provide GPs with an additional referral option when they suspect cancer, but the patient does not meet the criteria for a referral for suspected cancer.

She added: ‘I am pleased to confirm that one of the three RDCs introduced to North Wales is at Ysbyty Wrexham Maelor.’

Mr Skates said: “This is great news for Wrexham. Rapid Diagnostic Centers are part of a nationwide program supporting Welsh Health Boards to investigate the often vague symptoms that can be caused by cancer, and can provide rapid reassurance, help diagnose a range of other conditions and refer people to cancer treatment sooner if needed.

“One in two people is diagnosed with cancer. I am delighted that Wrexham has its own innovative center to help increase local capacity, speed up diagnosis and reduce anxiety for patients at extremely worrying times in their lives.

Member of the Senedd for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths, added: “The Welsh Government is committed to supporting our NHS as it begins to deal with the effects of the pandemic and this latest announcement will certainly be welcomed by the residents of Wrexham. .

“These new clinics aim to provide rapid diagnosis to patients across the region, allowing appropriate treatments to begin earlier and providing more clarity, certainty and support for people during a particularly overwhelming and stressful time.”

The DRC concept was identified by the Wales Cancer Network and previously piloted with funding from the Welsh Government.
