Tanner Ash joins BioNTech as Senior Specialist, Quality Assurance Operations BioBuzz
Tanner Ash recently joined BioNTech as Senior Specialist, Quality Assurance Operations. Tanner was most recently a supervisor at Ellume, a global diagnostics company that develops, manufactures and markets the next generation of digital diagnostic products for healthcare professionals and consumers.
In addition to his work with Ellume, over the past decade Tanner has held positions at Kite, VaLogic and Lonza.
BioBuzz caught up with Tanner to find out more about how he landed this new role and what excites him most.
Think a bit about your career path to this new position – how your previous experiences at Lonza, VaLogic, Kite, etc. prepared you for this new role at BioNTech?
The one word that comes to mind when I think back to my prep journey so far is community. I fully believe that everyone is uniquely made to serve a purpose here and everyone deserves to feel accepted and listened to in whatever environment they are placed in. In every organization I have been part of there have always been great challenges that have prepared me for more but the greatest challenges have never been met alone.
What’s the story of how you landed this new position? What prompted you to leave Ellume?
It was a great honor to support the launch of Ellume’s first US diagnostic facility. There was a void that came out of moving away from cell therapy for me – that was really the driving force. My wife was diagnosed with cancer at a young age and although she is now cured, I don’t feel like my duty to fight for the cure will ever be fulfilled. BioNTech has some of the strongest minds in cell therapy (Kevin Winzer, Tyler Thompson, and many more) that I have had the opportunity to work with in the past. It was an easy decision to make as I know this is one of the many organizations where magic happens for cancer patients.
What are you most looking forward to in this new role? What impact do you hope to have over the next 6 months to a year?
I’m extremely excited to work on QA procedures that both comply with regulations and make it easier to deliver treatment to patients both safely and at a faster pace. I know that the QA team and QA management at BioNTech are a group of forward-thinking and willing professionals. I am delighted to do magic with them. A year from now, I hope to be able to say that I have had a positive impact on the organization as a whole, raised morale and, most importantly, helped all the patients possible within this time frame.
How do you think this role will challenge you and help you grow?
BioNTech is a truly innovative company. When you work for an organization that thinks outside the box and leads, there is always a challenge to that. You have to think of solutions on the fly knowing that your solution may not be the best. But the goal is not to always have the best solution, it’s to support whoever does it in the team. I look forward to challenges and growing with the rest of the team. Iron sharpens iron.
