A team led by China’s top respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan received the country’s top science award on Wednesday for their outstanding contributions to respiratory disease research over the past half-century.

From the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic to the COVID-19 pandemic, from lung cancer to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the team, led by Zhong, He Jianxing and Ran Pixin, still maintains the attitude of seeking the truth from the facts, of daring to speak and of taking care, as well as the principle of the primacy of life. Not to mention that they play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases worldwide.

During the SARS outbreak in 2003, Zhong and his team helped the country control the outbreak with their expertise and transparency.

They are also committed to the prevention and control of COPD, a common chronic respiratory disease. COPD is also one of the diseases with particular influence on the quality of life and lung functions of patients and with the highest death rate among different diseases in China.

The team found that China’s COPD prevalence rate was 8.2 percent (2007 data), and 35.1 percent of patients had no distinctive respiratory symptoms. Most of the patients were women and with a long history of contact with biofuels.

Research has made a big breakthrough in epidemiology. Therefore, it was awarded as the “best article in environmental epidemiology” in 2014 by the Lancet journal. This was the first time Chinese academics have won the award since its inception in 2008.
