Zimbabwe: Death of a famous doctor specializing in Zim

An eminent Zimbabwean medical specialist, Dr Tapiwanashe Bwakura. considered a “gentle giant in the field of medicine” has passed away.
Colleagues in the medical fraternity said Dr Bwakura died on Sunday morning in South Africa where he was being treated for cancer.
Dr. Bwakura was a renowned doctor and teacher in the field of medicine for several years. The Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAFAIDS) has commended Dr Bwakura for his immense contribution to the health care delivery system in Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.
“A brave doctor, educator, gentleman and humanitarian has left us,” the regional NGO said in a statement.
“Dr Tapiwanashe Bwakura, our dear colleague, mentor, brother and friend… served on the SAfAIDS Board of Directors for many years. He was a longtime friend and ally of SAfAIDS. Dr Bwakura was a a renowned physician and educator in the field of medicine, his clinical expertise, academic, research and specialist services have helped to improve the lives of a large population in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa. above all, he was a genuine humanitarian – both in his heart and in his practice.
Dr Bwakura served as Acting CEO of one of the country’s leading referral centers – Sally Mugabe Central Hospital (formerly Harare Hospital) and Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Medical Association (Zima).
The medical specialist has also held a position with the National Association of Physicians of Zimbabwe (NAPAZ) and was a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).
He was a fundamental pillar of UZ Medical School where he educated many generations of medical students, residents and fellows. Besides training students, Dr. Bwakura has also treated thousands of patients in his private practice.
“His deep empathy, sincere care and concern for the well-being of his patients and their families, his students and his mentees, extends to all with whom he comes into professional and social contact,” said said SAfAIDS.
“His kindness and generosity, his keen intelligence, his warm laughter and love of humor, his sober commitment to his profession, his devotion to his family and his warmth towards his friends and colleagues are among the many rich attributes that weave the tapestry of his legacy. cherish his example of service and sacrifice.”
